For more than 75 years, Finland’s expectant mothers have been given a box by the state that serves as a maternity package for their new baby. It contains clothing, bedding and other newborn essentials. On top of that it comes with a mattress, so the box can be used as a baby’s first bed. Some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates,
but at least it has given all Finnish children, from all social backgrounds, a safe, simple and equal start in life.
